NICHOLAS L BROWN, book publisher
My grandfather, Nicholas Leon Brown, a Russian Immigrant who arrived in America at New York CIty's Ellis Island in 1902, was a high-end "boutique" book publisher and book seller, focusing mostly on erudite books, such as the first English translation of autobiography of painter Paul Gaugin.
Most of his books were published in the first three decades of the 20th century. He started his book publishing and selling in New York City at 123 Lexington Avenue. He later moved to Philadelphia, where he continued his business and raised a family, which included a son, Daniel Coleman Brown, who was my father.
Nicholas was born in Biialystok, Russia (now Poland), with the last name Brjanski or Briansky. He died on November 17, 1947, at the age of 61. I was born on May 11, 1951 and was given my grandfather's first name as my middle name. It is common in Jewish families, like ours, to name a child after a deceased family member.
Attached is a document I prepared that highlights the life and career of Nicholas L. Brown.
